HOWELL, Douglas Bert

2nd Lieutenant, Douglas Bert HOWELL

Aged 22
2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry
formerly No. 4706 - 14th London Regiment
and then 511242 Sgt in the London Scottish
Killed in Action on Sunday, 24th March 1918

Douglas Howell was born in Worlington (Mildenhall Q3-1895 4A:811), the son of Walter Edward and Helena Anne HOWELL (née PHILLIPS) ( later of 155 Lower Richmond Road, Putney).

1901 census... Aged 5 he was at 32 Pepys Road, Cottenham Park, Wimbledon with his father Walter Edward HOWELL [35] manager of golf club, born Worlington; his mother Helena Anne [34] born West Row; brothers Stanley W [8] born Worlington and Victor C C [3] born Raynes Park, Surrey. Their nurse was Annie Godfrey from Worlington and another servant was Annie Halls from West Row

1911 census... Aged 16 he was at 49 Lambton Road, Cotttenham Park, Wimbledon with his parents, brother Stanley ( a stock jobbers clerk), brother Victor and sister Vera A C [3] born in Wimbledon. Their servants now were Violet Bradley from Freckenham and Lottie Leverington from Worlington.

Probate records have his address as 49 Lambton Road, Cotttenham Park, Wimbledon and his battalion as 3rd. His will was in favour of his mother.

Little is known at present of his army career, a visit to Kew will hopefully reveal more. His brother had applied for his medals. There is an annotation on the medal index card stating his 1915 Star? was ineligible. that also will be looked into. Presumably he had not arrived in France before 31st December 1915

He apparently enlisted first as No. 4706 - 14th London Regiment, then went on to become No. 511242 Sergeant in the London Scottish. This would have been a re-numbering exercise as the 14th Battalion London Regiment were the London Scottish
He was commissioned on 25th April 1917. When he joined the Highland Light Infantry is not known. He is on a list of officers of the 2nd Battalion killed in the Battle for Bapaume on 24th March 1918. Three officers killed, three missing, four wounded. Other ranks had 150 killed missing or wounded.
